The Lowdown

O₂ SURFTOWN MUC is located near Munich Airport and aims to attract Germany’s estimated 2.5 million surfers, along with beginners eager to learn. The team broke ground on an Endless Surf ES34 system in 2022, and the surf park officially opened in 2024.

Located next to several airport commuter hotels and local businesses, the surf park is also part of a larger development. A 29,000-square-meter building called “Hybrid One” is in the works. It will feature offices, retail space, and food services, creating a unique live-work-play quarter rather than traditional office real estate.

Waves and Technology

Type of wave(s):
Lefts and rights break in a heart-shaped Endless Surf pool, offering a wide range of wave styles.

Wave Generating Technology:
The surf park uses Endless Surf tech, which creates waves by pressurizing air through caissons. The number of caissons matches the pool model. For instance, an ES36 has 36 caissons, while an ES48 has, you guessed it, 48 caissons. The O₂ SURFTOWN MUC wave pool features 34 caissons.

This setup supports multiple wave formats, including Split Peak (A-Frame) and Point Break modes. Surfers can enjoy simultaneous rights and lefts or longer waves that span the entire pool.

Operating Hours and Surf Sessions

Hours of Operation / Seasonal Hours:
Surfing is available daily in summer from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Winter hours are shorter but still offer consistent access to surf sessions.

Sessions:
O₂ SURFTOWN MUC provides surfing for all levels: First Timer, Rookie, Progressive, Intermediate, Advanced, and Expert. A Pro setting is in development. Surfers choose between A-Frame mode or Point Break mode, and special coaching sessions are also available to help improve skills.

Individual Session Prices

How much does it cost to surf at O₂ SURFTOWN MUC? Here’s the breakdown by mode:

Point Break Mode – €149 per session
This advanced setting delivers waves that run the entire pool length, with ride times up to 18 seconds. Designed for barrels, turns, and aerials, it can also be adjusted for relaxed cruising or longboarding.

Rif010 Wave Pool Prices – Rotterdam, Netherlands

Wide shot of RiF010 with surfers and spectators
Spectators line the canal as RiF010 hosts surf sessions in a uniquely public setting.

The Lowdown: Wave Pool Prices and Details for RiF010 Rotterdam

RiF010 is the Netherlands’ first public surf-focused wave pool and the world’s first urban surf tank. What makes this project unique is its location—right in the heart of Rotterdam. The wave basin is built into the Steigersgracht canal, surrounded by restaurants, shops, and public walkways that attract spectators and city surfers alike.

The wave is a 1.5-meter right-hander powered by SurfLoch’s pneumatic technology, designed to mimic the shape and energy of natural ocean waves. First proposed in 2014 and approved in 2023, the project received a €3 million investment from the Rotterdam municipality. On sunny days, it’s not uncommon to see 100+ people gathered around the basin, watching surfers ride city-center waves.

Construction and Wave Technology

WavePool Construction Progress: Open and operational.

Accessibility: Open to the public. RiF010 was built with inclusivity in mind and integrates seamlessly into the city’s pedestrian infrastructure.

Wave Generating Technology: RiF010 uses SurfLoch wave systems. It features eight caissons, similar to the setup in the Palm Springs test pool. These pneumatic chambers generate consistent, high-quality waves tailored to skill level.

Wave Direction: Currently, the pool only produces right-handers, following the shape of the surrounding canal. Waves break across two zones—The Point (also called The Rif) and The Bay—resulting in 300 swells per hour, or roughly 600 surfable waves every hour.

Hours of Operation and Seasonality

RiF010 is open during the spring, summer, and autumn transition seasons. Whether it will remain open through the Dutch winter is still being evaluated. Regardless, the facility is designed to handle moderate weather, with flexibility built into its scheduling.

Aläia Bay Pricing – Sion, Switzerland

view of Alaïa Bay surf park in the Swiss Alps with artificial wave pool surrounded by mountain peaks.
Alaïa Bay delivers high-performance hard-breaking artificial waves as well soft waves for beginners in the heart of the Swiss Alps.

The Lowdown: Tucked away in the heart of the Swiss Alps, Alaïa Bay is the first wave pool of its kind in continental Europe and likely one of the most visually distinct locations to surf, regardless of ability. The wave pool opened in May 2021. The Surf Lagoon is powered by a Wavegarden Cove, the same wave-generating modules used at The Wave (UK) and URBNSURF (Australia). However, the pool is smaller due to the removal of the shallow beginner wading area. Instead, beginner surfers access separate sessions designed with easier wave settings. Alaïa Bay includes a 300m² AAA Surf Shop, a full-service restaurant with direct views of the lagoon, and an onsite ding repair workshop.

Type of Technology: Wavegarden Cove

Wave’s Technical Information: Cove Technology – Wave height: 0.6–1.8 m (2–6 ft), Left and Right break, Ride length: 8–14 seconds

Depending on the time of year, it is possible to snowboard, skate, and surf in the same day.

Final Word:
With its tiered surf park pricing, consistent wave output, and distinct alpine environment, Alaïa Bay continues to position itself as a benchmark for inland surfing in Europe. The Lowdown: Located just outside Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the Qiddiya development is a $750 million leisure and entertainment megaproject. Current renderings show a large-scale water park featuring an Endless Surf wave pool set within a canyon-inspired landscape. The surf lagoon will be part of the Aqua Arabia attractions zone that includes waterslides, splash areas, and themed water experiences across nine entertainment zones.

In line with the park’s naturalistic theme, surf sessions are expected to take place beneath oversized cement animals sculpted into the surrounding terrain. The wave-generating wall for Endless Surf will be embedded in a rock-like facade, merging architecture with visual storytelling. At full scale, the Qiddiya site is expected to cover 376 square kilometers (145 square miles)—a land footprint nearly four times the size of Walt Disney World and over three times larger than the city of San Francisco.

WavePool Construction Progress

As of now, the surf lagoon remains under construction. No opening date has been announced, but it should be soon. Once the pool opens it will be the second Endless Surf wave technology open to the public.

Accessibility and Public Use

The surf park is not yet built and therefore not open to the public. When completed, it will be part of Aqua Arabia which will feature next-level waterpark attractions both residents and international visitors.

Endless Surf o2 Surftown MUC
Surftopia will use and Endless Surf wave pool like the one shown here in Munich.

Wave Technology and Pool Design

Qiddiya’s Surftopia surf lagoon will use Endless Surf technology, a pneumatic system capable of producing multiple wave types simultaneously. The system is modular and scalable, with models ranging from the ES36 (36 wave chambers) to the ES4800, which can stretch to nearly 300 meters (1,000 feet) in length. Renderings indicate a heart-shaped pool designed to produce both left- and right-breaking waves just like the one used in Munich, Germany.

Seasonal Operations

Given the arid climate of central Saudi Arabia, year-round operation is possible. However, no formal schedule has been released.

Estimated Cost to Surf at Qiddiya

Official pricing has not been released. However, based on similar facilities and regional market conditions, estimated costs may range from $75 to $125 per surf session. This estimate is slightly above current rates at Wadi Adventure, another artificial surf venue in the region known for its appearance in Dion Agius’ Electric Blue Heaven film. Exact pricing will depend on Qiddiya’s final session structure, wave offerings, and booking model.

Final Word

The sheer scale and ambition of the project make it a key future player in the global surf park landscape. With a heart-shaped lagoon, Endless Surf’s flexible technology, and an immersive, themed environment, the development is poised to attract interest well beyond Saudi Arabia’s borders. Once completed, it could become the largest artificial surf facility in the Middle East, offering a controlled wave experience alongside mainstream theme park attractions.

The Lowdown: Originally brought into the surf spotlight by Dion Agius’ Electric Blue Heaven video, the wave at Wadi Adventure is now accessible for the public. The artificial wave breaks either left or right off a vertical wall and gradually softens as it pushes toward the center of the pool. Located in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates, Wadi Adventure sits at the foot of Jebel Hafeet and is part of a broader outdoor adventure park that includes kayaking and climbing.

Accessibility and Reservations

Surfing sessions are available by reservation only. Booking in advance is required to secure a spot in either public or private sessions.

Wave Technology

Wadi Adventure’s wave system uses displaced water technology, similar to that seen at Typhoon Lagoon and Siam Park. The setup is provided by Whitewater/ Barr + Wray, and the wave breaks against a concrete wall before spreading into the main pool area.

Surf Session Pricing

The cost of surfing at Wadi Adventure is split into tiers depending on the type of access:

  • General Access: $18 park entry fee

  • VIP Private Party: $460 for full pool rental
  • Semi-Private Session: $275, includes private use of advanced wave only

Wave Pool Details

  • Structure: Concrete pool located within a resort complex
  • Waves per hour: Not publicly listed
  • Wave format: Steep takeoff with gradual fade through the pool center

Atmosphere and Apparel

In private bookings, the pool has hosted night sessions and surf-centric parties. Common surf apparel includes boardshorts, bikinis, or spring suits, depending on season and preference.

Final Word

Wadi Adventure remains one of the earliest artificial wave destinations in the Middle East. Although newer technologies have emerged since its debut, the surf experience—particularly for private groups—offers a consistent, customizable setup in a controlled desert environment. Its legacy in modern surf media continues to draw interest from traveling surfers looking for a novelty session.

Surf Lakes – Yeppoon, Australia (Not Yet Open)

The Lowdown: Positioned on the Capricorn Coast in Yeppoon, Queensland, the Surf Lakes demonstration center showcases one of the most ambitious artificial wave technologies to date. Instead of a straight or linear design, the pool uses a central mechanical hub to send out concentric waves in all directions. These waves break along a ring of engineered reefs, points, and ledges, delivering multiple wave types at the same time.

Originally built as a prototype, the facility has been approved by local council for public operation, and plans are now underway to transition it into a fully accessible resort and surf coaching destination.

Public Access and Facility Plans

The Yeppoon site is not yet open to the public, but Surf Lakes has received approval to develop the area into a commercial surf resort. The proposed master plan includes:

  • A progression and wellness centre with video review booths, recovery areas, and private training spaces
  • A pavilion for surf-specific mobility and strength work
  • Dining facilities with sunset views
  • Hot and cold plunge pools, skate ramp, and breakout coaching rooms

Future expansions for the 90-acre property are expected to include:

  • On-site accommodation with up to 250 rooms
  • Camping and caravan sites
  • Festival infrastructure, retail stores, a scuba diving pool, a renewable energy plant, and multiple food and beverage venues

Wave Type and Technology

Surf Lakes’ system is distinct from linear wave pools. A mechanical plunger at the center of the lake displaces water outward in a circular pattern. These waves then interact with five distinct break zones, each engineered for a specific skill level—from beginner whitewater to elite-level slabs.

This multi-break model allows for simultaneous surfing across all five wave types, removing the need for time-slot programming and dramatically increasing wave volume.

YourWave Hawea Brings Year-Round Surfing to New Zealand’s Southern Alps

Tucked between Wanaka and Queenstown in New Zealand’s Southern Alps, YourWave Hawea delivers something this iconic adventure region has never had: consistent, rideable waves just minutes from the mountains.

Before the surf park opened in May 2023, local surfers had to travel two to three hours to reach the nearest ocean swell. Now, thanks to YourWave’s modular stationary wave technology, inland surfing is a year-round reality.

Technology and Wave Design

Rather than relying on deep-water pumps or traveling wave machinery, YourWave uses a patented inflatable surface that’s fully customizable. The design creates a safe, controlled wave up to 7.5 feet tall, with a soft, impact-absorbing bottom. This eliminates the traditional hazards of washout zones and allows beginners and advanced surfers to ride the same machine at different intensity levels.

The current setup includes a 26-foot surfable surface, but the technology can be scaled to double that width—or even more. The wave settings offer lefts, rights, and wakesurf waves, and operators can adjust them on demand for riders of any skill level.

In addition to public access, the site also serves as a research and development hub for future YourWave systems, aimed at global deployment.

Public Access and Operating Hours

YourWave Hawea is open seven days a week, year-round, with standard hours from 9am to 5pm. Evening sessions are expected to be added during the summer season.

While still in its early operational phase, the facility has already become a staple for local surfers and visitors alike, offering both drop-in sessions and private bookings.

Pricing and Pass Options

Pricing is structured by session type and age group ($1 NZD = $0.58 USD):

  • $99 NZD – Adult medium-wave session
  • $89 NZD – Youth session (ages 12–15)
  • $45 NZD – Beginner session for kids (ages 5–11)
  • $799 NZD/hour – Private group sessions (discounts available for multi-hour bookings)

For frequent users, concession and season passes offer significant savings. Some packages reduce session costs to as low as $50 NZD, making it one of the most accessible premium wave experiences in the region.

What’s Next for Hawea

Although fully operational, YourWave Hawea is still evolving. The site’s R&D mandate means it may become a proving ground for new technologies, wider surf surfaces, or larger wave formats. With Queenstown and Wanaka already popular for mountain sports, Hawea could soon position itself as New Zealand’s inland capital for surf training, tourism, and tech development.

While its primary function is recreational, the wave pool is available for both surf school lessons and private surfing sessions, offering rare access to a high-volume, left-and-right breaking wave.

The facility was originally engineered by WhiteWater Industries Ltd and Barr + Wray, using a hydraulic system that can generate 3- to 8-foot waves depending on water load and settings. Due to high demand and limited surf windows, early reservations are essential.

While best known for WSL competitions, training footage, and promotional clips, the facility is also available for private bookings—if you have the right contacts and the right budget. Surfing at the Ranch is not open to the general public, but it can be rented for private groups or accessed through limited WSL VIP experiences.

Access and Availability

The Kelly Slater Surf Ranch is not a public wave pool. It operates on a private, invitation-only, or corporate rental basis, and availability is handled directly through internal WSL or Surf Ranch contacts. Surf sessions are held away from public schedules and with extreme exclusivity.

Occasionally, spectator packages are made available during contests or special WSL events, though these have become more limited since the cancellation of the Surf Ranch Pro.

Ka’ana Wave Co. – British Columbia, Canada

Bridal Falls Surf Park, opening mid-summer 2025, brings British Columbia its first deep-water standing wave pool, designed for four-season surf and spa access in a mountain resort setting.
Bridal Falls Surf Park in British Columbia will feature a rectangular surf pool with a standing deep-water CM7 Ka’ana Wave Co. machine.

The Lowdown: Wave Pool Prices and Year-Round Surf Access at Bridal Falls, BC

Slated to open in mid-summer 2025, the Bridal Falls Surf Park is set to become British Columbia’s first surfable wave pool. Located along the Trans‑Canada Highway—about 1 hour and 20 minutes east of Vancouver—this project is strategically positioned at the eastern edge of the Fraser Valley, the last convenient stop before the steep mountains of the Northern Cascades. With approximately 4 million vehicles passing by each year, the site enjoys excellent exposure and accessibility.

The property sits within an existing waterpark and adjoining RV resort that draws young families every summer, yet it has long lacked the amenities necessary for four‑season visitation and broader demographic appeal. In true Pacific Northwest fashion, Bridal Falls is a deciduous location that blossoms in spring, bustles in summer, and quiets into hibernation during cold, dark winter days.

To transform this seasonal destination into a year‑round outdoor experience, the park is anchored by a CM7‑Surf pool and complemented by Nordic spa amenities. This dual offering provides an active, outdoor watersports experience—catering to surfing, whitewater kayaking, swim training, and play—alongside a warming and relaxing spa element that includes hot tubs and saunas. In colder months, when surf participation typically drops off, the spa ensures that guests still have a compelling reason to visit. The result is an experience that caters to a wide array of guests: families seeking an adventure with the kids, serious surfers, and even grandparents looking to unwind.

Public Access and Session Options

The Bridal Falls Surf Park is designed to be fully open to the public. Surf sessions are offered in both 30‑ and 60‑minute increments, with online reservations and gear rentals available. The facility caters to all skill levels—from first‑time beginners (with coaching and equipment provided) to advanced surfers seeking high‑performance wave riding.

Wave and Pool Technology

The CM7‑Surf system drives the dynamic side of the park, delivering a deep‑water standing wave and supporting multiple activities beyond surfing. The pool itself is a 110’ x 50’ Myrtha design, featuring clearly marked lanes for competition and training. Conforming to World Aquatics (formerly FINA) standards, the pool includes:

  • Active Surf Zone: 8 feet deep at the surf end
  • Leisure Zone: 4 feet deep at the shallow end, designed for guests to lounge and watch while others surf
  • Additional Features: Lane markers for swim training and a bulkhead that allows the facility to host competitive swimming events

This hybrid design supports active surf sessions, whitewater kayaking, and swim training—all in a multi‑use, year‑round environment.

  • Additional Amenities: Nordic spa (hot tubs, saunas) to extend appeal during colder seasons

The fusion of surf and spa experiences ensures the venue remains attractive even when surfing conditions are not optimal, thereby broadening its appeal throughout the year.

Atmosphere and Environment

Bridal Falls is imbued with the distinctive flavor of the Pacific Northwest. The location transforms with the seasons—vibrant and bustling in summer, calming in fall, and quiet in winter. This seasonal character, combined with innovative surf and spa amenities, creates a unique, multi‑dimensional visitor experience.

Whether you’re riding the waves in the active surf zone or relaxing in the Nordic spa, Bridal Falls Surf Park offers a compelling destination that extends far beyond the typical seasonal waterpark.

Final Word

Bridal Falls Surf Park is poised to redefine how British Columbia approaches recreational water sports. By combining state‑of‑the‑art surf technology with year‑round wellness amenities, the venue creates an environment that appeals to thrill‑seekers and those simply looking to relax. From dynamic surf sessions in the CM7‑Surf pool to restorative experiences in the Nordic spa, this project marks a bold step toward year‑round outdoor recreation in the Fraser Valley.

West Edmonton Surf Club – Edmonton Canada

West Edmonton Mall offers surf nights in a tropical indoor environment, where surfers catch peaky waves after hours under the dome, no matter the season outside.

The Lowdown: Wave Pool Prices and Surf Sessions at West Edmonton Mall, Canada

Tucked inside one of the largest shopping centers in North America, Surf Nights at West Edmonton Mall provide an unexpected but much-loved surf experience in the heart of Alberta. Operated through the West Edmonton Surf Club, the venue offers indoor wave pool surfing sessions for both beginners and advanced surfers in a controlled, tropical environment.

The pool, part of the World Waterpark complex, features a 1980s-era water drop system that creates peaky, fast-moving waves every few seconds. Surf sessions are scheduled after hours, once the park closes to the general public.

Public Access and Surf Club Format

Surf sessions are open to the public but must be booked as lessons, which include instruction and orientation. All bookings are handled via the West Edmonton Surf Club, which also manages surf nights for members. Once you’ve completed a lesson, you’re welcome to join regular surf sessions, which typically occur 2–4 times per week, mostly in the evenings.

While the pool runs standard wave programming for swimmers during the day, surf access begins after closing hours.

Wave Technology and Pool Conditions

The system is powered by a gravity-fed water drop mechanism, which agitates swell across the chlorinated pool. Though the tech is retro by today’s standards, it creates consistent waves with short-period energy that’s perfect for quick takeoffs and compact rides.

Wave Specs:

  • Wave Type: Artificial swell from water drop system
  • Wave Height: 1–3 feet
  • Wave Frequency: Every 4–5 seconds
  • Set Frequency: One set per minute
  • Wave Quality: Peaky and choppy
  • Session Length: 90 minutes

Water Conditions:

  • Pool Temp: 25–28°C (78–85°F)

  • Busy nights: Typically 20–25 waves per session
  • Average attendance: 10–30 surfers

Wave count is high due to the short interval and fast reset time—making this an ideal training ground for quick reps and improving takeoffs.

Environment and Indoor Setting

  • Facility: Indoor chlorinated wave pool within West Edmonton Mall
  • Climate: Tropical dome atmosphere, warm air and water year-round
  • Surf Club Management: West Edmonton Surf Club coordinates access and scheduling
  • Extras: Spectator areas, changing facilities, indoor beach vibe

The indoor setting makes this a welcome escape from Canadian winters, where surfers can trade icy sidewalks for boardshorts and tropical humidity under the dome.

Final Word

West Edmonton Mall’s Surf Nights may not offer the longest rides or most powerful waves, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in accessibility, consistency, and volume. With a strong local surf club community, high wave counts, and a reliably warm indoor setting, it remains a one-of-a-kind inland surf experience in Canada.
