Local Residents, Commissioners Defeat Boca Raton Surf Park Project

The surf park development drama can sometimes play out like a torrid telenovela with residents and proponents clashing while local officials weave between pro and con positions. To date, La Quinta in California and the Kelly’s project on the Sunshine Coast have been the most volatile; both began with heated momentum only to crash and disappear.

The Boca Raton Surf Park had solid momentum mid-October, edging out eight contenders to earn top proposal honors for the city’s new North Park development. But this week the city voted 3-2 to nix the wave pool.

Project backers Cheyne Cottrell and Matt Oliveira planned for the surf park to occupy approximately 23.8 acres and deliver surf and related activities to wave-starved South Florida.

Project representatives said the location was selected based on regional growth, accessibility, and potential long-term value.

According to local news outlet Boca Post, citing strong concerns about the proposed location, Commissioner Bob Rollins of the Greater Boca Raton Beach & Park District introduced a motion to halt the project.

“I’m uncomfortable moving forward,” Rollins said. “It’s a beautiful project, but not the right location. The folks who live in that neighborhood are the most vociferous.”

The meeting took more than four hours. During the public comment period, more than 30 speakers addressed the commission with mixed views on the proposed surf park.

One resident raised concerns about a deed restriction tied to the site, suggesting legal issues could arise if the land use changed. A commissioner who voted against the project said they had received emails complaining about the potential for decreased property values and quality-of-life issues should the surf park be built.

This is breaking news—no word from the wave pool’s developers as to their next steps. We will keep you posted.
