More than 1,000 Munich-based river surfers have taken advantage of O₂ SURFTOWN MUC’s Eisbach Special, a campaign offering free surf sessions in response to the sudden disappearance of the Eisbach wave. The offer, which runs through November 30, has so far resulted in approximately €120,000 worth of free sessions.
O₂ SURFTOWN MUC launched the initiative in early November to support the local surf community after the Eisbach became unsurfable. The artificial river wave has long served as a cultural landmark and a training ground for many of SURFTOWN’s own team members, including its founder.
“The response impressively shows how strong the Munich surf community stands together,” said Jonas Boehm-Tettelbach, co-founder of SURFTOWN. “The Eisbach influenced the origin of SURFTOWN – and especially now, with the Eisbach wave being unsurfable, we wanted to give something back. We’re happy for the huge participation.”

To redeem the free surf session, participants must provide a photo showing themselves surfing a Munich river wave. The session type can be selected freely by the surfer.
SURFTOWN will continue offering the free session deal through the end of the month. “The Eisbach is considered as a part of the heart of German surf culture – and a place that significantly influenced the creation of SURFTOWN,” Boehm-Tettelbach said. “Many team members, including SURFTOWN founder Chris Boehm-Tettelbach, learned to surf there themselves.”
The company expressed hope that the Eisbach wave will return to its original form soon. In the meantime, O₂ SURFTOWN MUC remains available to local surfers looking for consistent conditions.
The Lowdown
O₂ SURFTOWN MUC is located near Munich Airport and aims to attract Germany’s estimated 2.5 million surfers, along with beginners eager to learn. The team broke ground on an Endless Surf ES34 system in 2022, and the surf park officially opened in 2024.
Located next to several airport commuter hotels and local businesses, the surf park is also part of a larger development. A 29,000-square-meter building called “Hybrid One” is in the works. It will feature offices, retail space, and food services, creating a unique live-work-play quarter rather than traditional office real estate.
Waves and Technology
Type of wave(s):
Lefts and rights break in a heart-shaped Endless Surf pool, offering a wide range of wave styles.
Wave Generating Technology:
The surf park uses Endless Surf tech, which creates waves by pressurizing air through caissons. The number of caissons matches the pool model. For instance, an ES36 has 36 caissons, while an ES48 has, you guessed it, 48 caissons. The O₂ SURFTOWN MUC wave pool features 34 caissons.
This setup supports multiple wave formats, including Split Peak (A-Frame) and Point Break modes. Surfers can enjoy simultaneous rights and lefts or longer waves that span the entire pool.
Operating Hours and Surf Sessions
Hours of Operation / Seasonal Hours:
Surfing is available daily in summer from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Winter hours are shorter but still offer consistent access to surf sessions.
Sessions:
O₂ SURFTOWN MUC provides surfing for all levels: First Timer, Rookie, Progressive, Intermediate, Advanced, and Expert. A Pro setting is in development. Surfers choose between A-Frame mode or Point Break mode, and special coaching sessions are also available to help improve skills.
