Free Surf Lessons Offered to Scottish Children at Lost Shore

Scottish Surfing and Lost Shore Surf Resort will offer free beginner surf lessons for children this summer through the Catch the Wave programme as part of SportScotland’s Summer of Sport campaign.

The sessions will take place July 26 and Aug. 2 at Lost Shore Surf Resort near Edinburgh. The programme is open to primary and secondary school children aged 7 and older and includes coaching, surf equipment, wetsuits and lunch.

The initiative is designed to introduce young people to surfing, increase participation in the sport and support the development of Scotland’s surfing community.

SportScotland’s Summer of Sport campaign encourages children and young people across Scotland to participate in sports and physical activity during the school holidays.

The sessions build on Lost Shore’s growing programme of community initiatives, schools engagement and youth development activities designed to make surfing more accessible across Scotland.

“Catch the Wave is all about giving young people the opportunity to experience surfing for the first time, regardless of their background or previous experience,” said Mark Boyd of Scottish Surfing. “We know that trying something new can be life-changing, helping build confidence, resilience and a lifelong love of being active.

“Working alongside Lost Shore gives us an incredible venue where children can learn in a safe and controlled environment with expert coaching and guaranteed waves. We’re proud to be part of Summer of Sport and hope this inspires even more young people to discover everything surfing has to offer.”

The programme will be delivered at Lost Shore Surf Resort, Europe’s largest inland surf destination, through Scottish Surfing’s Catch the Wave initiative.

“One of the reasons Lost Shore was created was to give more people the opportunity to experience surfing, regardless of where they live or whether they’ve ever stepped into the sea,” said Lee Wood, Managing Director of Lost Shore Surf Resort. “These sessions are exactly what that vision is about. The sessions build on Lost Shore’s growing programme of community initiatives, schools engagement and youth development activities designed to make surfing more accessible across Scotland.”

Scottish Surfing said research has highlighted surfing’s benefits for physical fitness, confidence, resilience and mental wellbeing. Participants will be supported by qualified instructors throughout each session. Places are limited and advance registration is required through the Catch the Wave programme.

In May of 2026 the wave pool promoted data showing an increase in UK families looking for shorter, closer and more active weekend breaks. More information about Lost Shore Surf Resort is at this link.
