Wave Pool Coaches Contribute to Scotland’s Record Finish at Euro Surf 2025

It’s happened. And Rick Kane, all the way across the Pond, would be very, very proud.

Coaches from Lost Shore Surf Resort helped the Scottish national surfing team achieve its best-ever placement at the 2025 Euro Surf Championships. The event held from July 18 to 25 during the Ocean Spirit Festival in Portugal.

According to Lost Shore, surf coaches Craig McLachlan and Finn Clark joined the team in both competitive and support roles. McLachlan is the current Scottish National Surfing Champion, and Clark is identified by the resort as a rising shortboard athlete.

The European championship featured 18 nations, including debut entries from Turkey and Latvia, and included men’s and women’s competitions in both shortboard and longboard disciplines.

Team Lineup and Performance

The Scottish team featured a group of experienced competitors. Longboarder Ansel Parkin, who holds three Scottish titles, competed alongside Mark Boyd, a multi-time national champion. Robyn Larg, recognized earlier this year for surfing Nazaré, joined Phoebe Strachan, a five-time women’s champion, and 14-year-old Callie Cruickshank, a two-time under-14 champion and finalist in the 2024 Boardmasters Under-18 Junior Event.

Scotland placed 10th overall, the team’s highest finish at a European surfing competition. Lost Shore noted that heat wins came from Boyd, Strachan, Larg, and Cruickshank. Strachan progressed to the third round, marking what the resort described as further evidence of Scotland’s progress in European surfing.

Lee Wood, Director of Surf at Lost Shore Surf Resort, said it was a huge moment for Scottish surfing.

“To see our team represented at Euro Surf 2025 is not only a proud moment for us as part of the Lost Shore family, but also a huge step forward for Scottish surfing,” said Lee. “Each one of them is so dedicated and passionate about the sport; it’s great to see them competing on an international stage.”

Lost Shore Surf Resort, located near Edinburgh, is promoted as the largest in Europe, spanning an area reportedly three times the size of Wembley Stadium’s pitch.

According to the resort, it offers instruction from International Surfing Association-qualified coaches, along with gear rental including wetsuits, gloves, boots and boards. The facility includes accommodations and a waterfront area with a bar, café, and restaurant featuring local food and beverage offerings.
