Television: Jay Occhilupo attempts wave pool slab

Son of Occy and Qld Junior champion, Jay Occhilupo takes on a wave pool slab known as The Island, at the Surf Lakes R&D facility.

The son of legendary goofy foot Mark Occhilupo, Jay donned helmet and moxie to attempt the drop without much luck. He then moved over to Occy’s Peak to try out the right hander, with more success.

Occy’s Peak is a mid-sized, a-frame, reef break designed for intermediate to advanced surfers. Surf Lakes says it has a max wave-face height of 2.0m and ride length of between 10 and 14 seconds (varies depending on wave size).

The clip came as part of Surf Lakes most recent round of testing.

“Right now we are making some minor upgrades to the wave machine, ahead of further testing in mid October,” Surf Lakes said in a statement. “The next phase of testing is mainly focused around creating multiple sets of waves, improving energy efficiency, developing the commercial design and further work on the other reefs.”
