Wave Pool Wins: Korea’s Kanoa Hee-Jae the First Korean Surfer to Win a WSL Event

The 2025 Siheung Korea Open wrapped July 20 at Wave Park South Korea with four winners crowned across the WSL Qualifying Series (QS) 6000 and Longboard Qualifying Series (LQS) 1000 events. The wave pool is becoming a regular stop on the WSL Asia Tour, offering surfers from the region a chance to compete with the best.

QS 6000 Results

Nanaho Tsuzuki won the women’s QS 6000, earning a 16.93 two-wave total. Tsuzuki opened the final with a backside air-reverse, scoring 8.50, then followed with an 8.43. “I’m so happy right now,” Tsuzuki said. “It was actually a mistake to have that air on the first wave… I was really happy.” Kana Nakashio placed second. Sara Wakita and Charli Hately took third and fourth. Nakashio now leads the WSL Asia Regional Rankings.

On the men’s side, Ketut Agus secured the win with a 17.77 total, the event’s highest. “I feel incredible,” Agus said. “It’s awesome for us to have the opportunity to surf in an event in a wave park…” Kei Kobayashi finished second. Bronson Meydi and Reef Heazlewood rounded out the top four.

Korean Surfer Wins LQS 1000

Korea’s Kanoa Hee-Jae made history at the event, becoming the first Korean surfer to reach Finals Day in a QS 6000 and the first to win a WSL event outright. Hee-Jae posted a 16.07 two-wave total in the LQS Final, edging out Crisanto Villanueva, who placed second. Ryohei Taoka and Shohei Akimoto finished third and fourth.

“This is a really big day for me and my family,” Hee-Jae said. “I want to thank all of my friends and family for their support. It’s been amazing having all of these surfers in Korea showing how it’s done, and to be in there with them feels incredible. I was super bummed to get knocked out in the Semifinals of the QS (shortboard), so to come and win the longboard is super special.”

Dhea Novitasari won the women’s LQS with a 15.87 total, narrowly defeating Natsumi Taoka. “I’m just so happy and grateful to be here at this wave park surfing perfect waves,” Novitasari said. Hiroka Yoshikawa and Soojin Park finished third and fourth.

The WSL APAC event was held July 18–20 at Siheung Wave Park, one of Asia’s largest surf facilities.

Min-Mool

Siheung Wave Park South Korea, located in Siheung near Seoul, is the largest Wavegarden Cove installation in Asia, with 56 wave modules. Opened in 2020, it quickly became a gathering place for the peninsula’s surf community. The park has alos become a key venue for national training and regional events, attracting global attention during a snow-filled event in November of 2023
