Not a rapid wave, but not really a dynamic wave – what is it?

UNIT Surf Pool has introduced a 50-meter-wide surf pool that has what they are calling “wave pockets” – surfable sections that move across the pool.

The invention could be groundbreaking as it’s an upgrade on the stationary aspect of some rapid waves. Currently all deepwater-standing wave tech has a uniform dispersion of water that flows across an underwater ramp to produce a surfable standing wave.

The unitdynamicwave is engineered with what the company calls “precision water flow control technology” that allows for the formation of wave pockets that travel from one side to the other within the standing wave system.

UNIT launched a video that shows a scale model in operation, but it’s hard to discern what is actually happening in the wave tank. It eventually becomes clear that the open flow of water that creates the standing wave is now cut into several small chambers. One industry insider told us that it looks like either the amount of water exiting the chambers are controlled or a moving blade, block or other device that temporarily restricts the water flow in a specified chamber. When the process is done in sequence, a section moves laterally across the wave face.

Whatever the technique, the result is a change in the wave face which allows surfers to surf from one end of the wave pool to the next rather than carving back-and-forth like in current rapid waves.

how does the unit standing wave pool work

“After years of diligent testing and engineering, UNIT Surf Pool is proud to announce the launch of their new unitdynamicwave, an advanced wave pool that combines their proven, patented unitstandingwave technology with traveling dynamic wave pockets,” the company said in press release.

UNIT said that the system allows up to five surfers at once, each riding their own 20-second wave. Waves are adjustable in height and speed to match different skill levels.

“With a capacity of up to 25 surfers per session, the unitdynamicwave makes efficient use of space and resources, offering more surf time per participant,” the company added. “Designed to be both technically advanced and cost-effective, the unitdynamicwave is the first dynamic wave system available at a fraction of the cost of big surf parks.”

UNIT added that the dynamic artificial wave tech is lower in cost than traditional traveling wave technologies like Wavegarden and Endless Surf.
