Perth Surf Park construction begins in Western Australia

Last week, we reported that the Perth Surf Park in Western Australia project secured NAB cash, and just this week, construction has officially commenced. The true “shovels in the ground moment” marks the start of a private tourism infrastructure project described as the largest in the state in 25 years.

The project is being developed by Aventuur and is located in Jandakot, near the Kwinana Freeway and Cockburn Central Train Station. First waves are expected in Spring 2027, with a public opening scheduled for late 2027.

The development will include a 62-module Wavegarden Cove surfing lagoon, designed to produce consistent waves in a controlled environment. Additional facilities will include a members’ clubhouse, surf academy, wellness studio, retail store, equipment rental, training areas, skate park, hospitality venues, and accommodation.

The site is expected to attract more than one million visits annually. Developers estimate the project will create over 280 construction jobs and approximately 100 ongoing full-time roles. The total economic contribution is projected to exceed $300 million over its operating life.

Aventuur Chair and Chief Development Officer Andrew Ross said construction marked a key stage for the project.

“Today marks a significant milestone for the Perth Surf Park, and for everyone who has been part of the journey,” he said. “With the support of our investors RAC and Wyllie, our debt funding partner NAB, the WA Government, the City of Cockburn, and our broader community, we are delighted to have commenced construction.”

Andrew added that the project is intended as a long-term community asset.

“For Perth, this is about delivering a truly special community asset that embodies our surfing history, culture, and coastal lifestyle – a destination that is by the West, for the West.”

Western Australia Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti said the project had been anticipated for several years.

“The Perth Surf Park has been a long-anticipated project, and it is fantastic to see construction now underway,” she said. “This exciting new destination will create local jobs, boost the Western Australian economy, and deliver a new state-of-the-art sport and recreation facility that will enable our athletes to be more competitive on the world stage. At the same time, it will provide a safe, controlled environment for local residents and families to surf and stay active, which is easily accessible through our world-class public transport network.”

Tourism Minister Reece Whitby is looking for the project to add to the state’s visitor offerings.

“The Perth Surf Park will add a globally recognisable attraction to Western Australia’s tourism portfolio and help attract interstate and international visitors, encourage longer stays, and showcase our unique lifestyle and surfing culture.”

Surfing WA CEO Mark Lane said the project would support participation and training in the area and looked forward to enhancing the area’s competitiveness.

“It will complement our natural coastline, reduce pressure on crowded breaks, and create new opportunities for participation and athlete development right on Perth’s doorstep,” he said.

A membership waitlist has opened ahead of construction progress.
