Perth Surf Park Update: Project Secures Debt Funding From NAB, Formal Groundbreaking Just Ahead

The Perth Surf Park project continues to progress at that wonderfully glacial pace we’ve come to expect from wave pools. Besieged by a series of eclectic hurdles over the years, including everything from lawn bowling enthusiasts to tree ageism, the project continues to march forward. But, as they say, slow and steady wins the race. Here’s the latest.

Aventuur Chair and Chief Development Officer Andrew Ross confirmed that they have closed a construction loan with the National Australia Bank for the project and stated that this is indeed a significant milestone.

“Having secured debt financing from one of Australia’s leading banking institutions, early works commenced on site in January,” Andrew posted on social media. “This is ahead of a formal groundbreaking ceremony planned for early April.”

Andrew pointed out that the company will be opening registrations for a limited number of foundation memberships ahead of the projected late 2027 opening.

“On behalf of the Perth Surf Park team, we’d like to express our sincere thanks to our equity and debt providers for the support they have shown for this project of State significance.”

What is the Perth Surf Park

The $120 million project is located in Central Cockburn, adjacent to the freeway and train station. The surf park will include a 2.2-hectare Wavegarden Cove, approximately the size of Perth’s main sports stadium.

Aventuur says the Perth Surf Park will generate more than 280 construction jobs and around 100 ongoing roles. The project is projected to add over $300 million to the state economy over its lifespan.

Plans include a wave pool alongside a surf academy, rental shop, fitness and training areas, and a wellness centre. The site will offer lessons, coaching, and multi-day retreats.

Accommodation will feature rooftop glamping overlooking the lagoon, plus a private lounge. Members are set to get perks like a clubhouse, board storage, and dedicated viewing areas.

The venue is also expected to host surf contests, festivals, and community events. Perth is positioned as Aventuur’s flagship, alongside developments in Auckland and Jacksonville. The park is the largest private tourism infrastructure investment in Western Australia in more than two decades.

“The Perth Surf Park represents the first major tourism attraction to be delivered in Perth in over 25 years and is currently the single largest private investment in tourism infrastructure in the State,” said Andrew.

History and Location

Over the years, we saw the project set sights on Alfred Cove in Melville, only for it to move to its current location in Cockburn after local authorities rejected the wave pool’s application to use public land at Tompkins Park in 2019. Local council had given it a thumbs up, but then reversed their course of action after a small but vocal group of residents opposed the plan on the grounds of losing a bowling green, among other things.
