Surf Park Jobs & Wave Pool Employment Guide: Skills, Roles and Career Paths

Currently, the wave pool industry is creating thousands of jobs globally, and a single full-scale surf park employs 50–150+ people, depending on the season. Atlantic Park Surf in Virginia Beach, for example, employs more than 65 people during peak season, plus additional coaches and instructors through their WRV surf shop component. Daily wave pool operations require this staff for coaching, lifeguarding, hospitality, maintenance, management, and much more to function correctly.

Who is Hiring

Wave pool and surf park employers fall into five broad categories, each offering a different type of career path: Surf park operators, wave technology companies, surf park developers, resort and hospitality brands and lifestyle/adjacent brands

Surf Park Operators

These are the companies that run day-to-day wave pool facilities. Examples include URBNSURF (Australia), The Wave (Bristol, UK), Alaïa Bay (Switzerland), Atlantic Park Surf (Virginia Beach, USA), Waco Surf (Texas, USA), The Lineup at Wai Kai (Hawaii, USA) and elsewhere. Most hire seasonally, but at each facility that WavePoolMag has visited, we’ve found a pattern: There is a dedicated crew of long-time employees who stay on year-round.

Wave Technology Companies

These companies design, engineer, and install the systems that generate surf-quality waves. Endless Surf, Wavegarden, Surf Loch, UNIT Surf Pool, Surf Lakes, and Citywave USA all hire mechanical engineers, project managers, installation technicians, software developers, and sales representatives. To illustrate the rapid advancement in technologies globally, Endless Surf launched the world’s first saltwater pneumatic wave pool in 2026 – a system of special and refined engineering. In addition to the companies making waves, construction companies, water filtration specialists and pool lining experts, like Myrtha Pools, all play a part in the growing industry.

Surf Park Developers

Development platforms finance, design, and build new facilities. Archipelago, which launched in early 2026 with construction already begun on five projects, is a recent example. These companies hire project managers, finance professionals, planning consultants, architects, business development staff and other people who are key in bringing a dream to reality.

Resort and Hospitality Brands

Wave pools are increasingly co-located within larger mixed-use developments. Atlantic Park in Virginia Beach — a 10.2-acre development backed by Pharrell Williams — includes a surf park, hotel, retail, and entertainment. These operators seek hospitality professionals who understand surf culture and leisure operations. Staff members often prefer working at a wave pool to a traditional hotel or resort.

Lifestyle and Adjacent Brands

Of the board shapers, wetsuit manufacturers, sunscreen companies, and surf travel operators, most have been late to the wave pool party. But among those, there are several that are deeply connected to the surf park ecosystem. They regularly hire marketing, sales, and content roles that reward direct surf industry knowledge.

What Roles Exist at a Wave Pool?

Looking at the WavePoolJobs map, we find nearly one hundred distinct roles across the wave pool and surf park industry. The required qualifications vary considerably by role, but the industry consistently rewards demonstrated experience and cultural fit above formal credentials in most positions. The Wave Bristol is famous for finding dedicated individuals, with or without surfing experience, and kindling their stoke as they rise through the company.

Positions most often fall into one of several broad functional areas, including Water operations, Guest Services, Operations and Leadership. Of note, many surf parks hire employees who can do double duty, that is, to the combined position of, say, surf coach and lifeguard.

Water Operations

Water operations positions include surf instructors, head of surf instruction, lifeguards, surf guides, wave attendants, water safety directors, aquatics managers, trainee lifeguards, and surf coaches. ISA (International Surfing Association) Level 1 and Level 2 surf instructor certifications are commonly requested. Lifeguard qualifications vary by country but typically include first aid, CPR, and water rescue certifications. Surf safety training specific to wave pools — where wave patterns differ significantly from the ocean — is an emerging specialisation.

Guest Services

Guest services roles range from guest services representatives and admissions coordinators to rentals coordinators and events coordinators. Hospitality opportunities include food and beverage managers, bar staff, baristas, café staff and retail associates. Prior experience in hospitality, tourism, or retail is a strong foundation for any wave pool job. Surf literacy is a bonus but rarely a prerequisite.

Facility Operational Roles

Operational roles support the day-to-day running of facilities through positions such as operations manager, duty supervisor, facilities manager, maintenance technician and health and safety officer. Prior experience in hospitality, leisure, tourism, or recreation management is highly transferable. Nate Stevens, General Manager at Atlantic Park Surf in Virginia Beach, came from a retail management and beach services background before building his surf park career. His path began at NLand in Austin, Texas — where he created his own opportunity by building a detailed pitch and connecting directly with project leaders before any role was formally posted.

Leadership Roles

On the side of the surf park itself, leadership positions include HR managers, while corporate teams hire staff accountants, marketing managers and content creators, much of which transfers easily from other industries. For example, a Senior Staff Accountant at Waco Surf uses standard accounting tools (QBO, payroll services) alongside hospitality-specific software (FareHarbor, Toast) — a profile indistinguishable from hospitality accounting in any other sector. For marketing, a portfolio demonstrating relevant work — ideally within surf, action sports, outdoor recreation, or adjacent lifestyle categories — is the most effective qualification.

Wave-Making Technology

Wave pool work also offers highly specialized technology and development careers, including mechanical engineers and project managers responsible for designing, building and expanding surf park facilities. Within this sector you’ll find the people making the waves, like Cheyne Magnusson as well as the architects who design the overall surf park experience.

Water operations positions include surf instructors, head of surf instruction, lifeguards, surf guides, wave attendants, water safety directors, aquatics managers, trainee lifeguards, and surf coaches.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

Is surfing ability required? Not for the majority of roles. While surfing ability is an obvious requirement for instructors and water safety staff, the operational backbone of a surf park, guest services, hospitality, facilities, accounts, HR, marketing, bookings, does not require surfing skills. That said, surf literacy matters across all roles. Understanding the guest journey, appreciating what different wave settings offer different ability levels, and genuinely caring about the sport make anyone a stronger candidate for any position at a surf park.

Seasonality

Seasonality is one of the defining characteristics of surf park employment, particularly in climates with cold winters. Parks in continental Europe, the UK, and parts of North America typically operate at reduced capacity or close for a brief winter period, creating a seasonal hiring pattern that mirrors ski resort employment.

Parks like The Wave in Bristol and Alaïa Bay in Switzerland actively manage seasonal workforce changes, ramping up through spring and summer and contracting through autumn and winter. For full-time career seekers, management and engineering roles are more likely to offer year-round employment. For those who enjoy seasonal work, the global wave pool circuit offers the possibility of following summer between the northern and southern hemispheres.
