Tom Curren Joins Surf Lakes as U.S. Expansion Continues

Surf Lakes has been busy lately. Last week the company appointed a new CEO and now Tom Curren has joined Surf Lakes as a brand ambassador and shareholder. Curren will support the wave pool developer in areas including wave testing, product development, and promotional efforts in the United States.

Surf Lakes USA Expansion Plans

Surf Lakes, which recently established headquarters in the United States, says they are moving ahead with several commercial wave pool projects. The company adds that Curren’s involvement comes at a critical time as it seeks to establish a footprint in the U.S. market.

“Tom will assist on wave development, testing, and promotion as Surf Lakes rolls out projects across the USA,” the company stated in a release.

Curren’s Role at Surf Lakes

According to Surf Lakes, Curren will work alongside company staff and other ambassadors on creative and technical aspects of future sites. His responsibilities are expected to include content creation, feedback on wave quality, and strategic advisory roles.

Curren addressed his new role in a statement provided by the company.

“This is a very big decision here for me,” said Curren. “So, to be working with yourself [Aaron Trevis and Occy] I see something that is going to be a wonderful thing. I think it’s going to add a lot of good stuff to our sport, and I’m looking forward to seeing that in America.”

Collaboration with Mark Occhilupo

Curren’s longtime contemporary and fellow world champion, Mark “Occy” Occhilupo, has served as a Surf Lakes ambassador since the company’s early stages. Occhilupo welcomed Curren’s arrival, noting their past rivalry and current collaboration.

“We’re older now,” said Occhilupo. “And the rivalry has gone. We’ve been on surf trips together. This time we are splitting the peak. It’s gona be just epic!”

Company Remarks on Curren’s Appointment

Aaron Trevis, founder of Surf Lakes, described the partnership as a milestone for the company’s growth efforts in North America.

“We could not be more thrilled to have Tom’s endorsement and involvement in the future of Surf Lakes,” Trevis stated. “Not just a surfing legend, Tom is a deep thinker, innovator, talented musician and just a really nice human with a great family. As we race to get commercial sites open, we look forward to Tom and Occy being on the one team, sharing waves at Surf Lakes.”

Surf Lakes Wave Pool Technology

Anyone familiar with dropping a stone into water can grasp the basic concept behind the Surf Lakes wave pool system. A central plunger, driven by hydraulics and pneumatics, rises and falls at calibrated heights and speeds to generate waves. These swells radiate outward in 360 degrees, interacting with four distinct breaks and bathymetry. By adjusting the plunger’s height and downward force, Surf Lakes can produce waves ranging from 2 to 8 feet, at a rate of 2,000 waves per hour.

The system supports surf for all levels. Iconic breaks include The Island, Occy’s Peak, and a beachbreak. Other zones are designed for beginner and intermediate surfers.

To accommodate different site requirements, Surf Lakes now offers two system sizes. The Standard model targets entry-level markets with a smaller footprint. The XL version is intended for high-volume resorts and premium surf destinations. The prototype site in Yeppoon, Queensland, is transitioning into a public-facing surf park.
