WavePoolJobs: Roser Pie of Flowstate

In the fledgling wave pool jobs space, sometimes there’s a perfect moment when everything aligns. For Roser Pie, it came when Flowstate advertised a new position using an image of her snapped at the Melbourne wave pool. The role matched perfectly with her qualifications and ambitions. “It really felt like one of those moments where things were meant to be.”

Originally from Barcelona, Spain, Roser grew up in a city with a strong surf culture but inconsistent waves, which led her to travel frequently to surf. She developed her surfing seriously in the Basque Country (home to Wavegarden), where better conditions helped turn her interest into a long-term passion. She is now based in Australia, where she has shifted toward a more surf-focused lifestyle.

With a professional background in creative industries, including graphic design, production, and marketing within agencies, Roser now works in a hybrid role combining design, production, and marketing coordination. Before joining the company, she was already a Flowstate user and participated in early testing at URBNSURF Melbourne. And yes, we can confirm that the company holds meetings at the wave pool.

What is your background, Roser?

I’m originally from Barcelona, Spain, and I’ve been living in Australia for several years now. Barcelona actually has a pretty big surf culture, but waves don’t show up very often. Because of that, I ended up travelling quite a lot to surf, mainly to the Basque Country, Morocco, and the southwest of France. I really learned to surf properly in the Basque Country, which is such an amazing place for surfing. That’s where the obsession really started.

Professionally, my background is in creative work, graphic design, production, and marketing. I worked for many years in agencies, and when I moved to Australia, things became a bit more adventurous. I explored different projects and directions, which was really fun, but eventually I realised I wanted to combine my passion with my job. So when I saw the role at Flowstate, it honestly felt like a dream job.

What is your official job title?

Designer / Producer / Marketing Coordinator. It’s quite a hybrid role, which I really enjoy.

What are your official job duties?

I work across a few different areas. On the creative side, I design graphics, campaigns, and visual content for the platform and our partners. I also produce content around competitions, surf clubs, and wave pool events, helping tell the stories around the waves and the community. On the marketing side, I help coordinate campaigns, partnerships, and communications so more surfers discover Flowstate and understand what it can do for them. So every week is a bit different, which keeps things fun.

Roser says that seeing yourself surf for the first time can be a bit of a Flowstate reality check.

Has previous work experience helped you in this role

Yes, definitely. I’ve always been curious and eager to try different things, so over the years I’ve worked across design, production, and marketing. That experience helps a lot in a hybrid role like this. But honestly, the biggest help is simply being a surfer. When you understand the feeling of a good wave, and how curious surfers are to see their own surfing, you immediately understand why this platform is exciting.

Can you please explain how Flowstate works?

Flowstate captures and organises your surf sessions automatically. The system detects each ride and delivers those clips directly to the surfer on the platform. From there, surfers can watch their waves, download clips, analyse their surfing, and track their progression over time. You can also create highlight reels, share waves with friends, or review sessions like your own surf archive.

Why is Flowstate unique?

Surfing is one of those sports where you rarely see yourself. In your head, you’re doing the turn of the year… then comes the Flowstate reality check. But that’s exactly why it’s so powerful. Watching your waves is fun, a little humbling, and one of the best ways to actually improve your surfing.

What is the biggest challenge in your day-to-day job?

Probably keeping up with how fast the platform evolves. The team behind Flowstate is incredibly talented, and they’re constantly building and improving things. My challenge is making sure we communicate those updates clearly to users, partners, and surf communities. The platform moves fast, so part of my job is translating all that great work into something simple and easy to understand.

Searching for surf beyond Barcelona has brought Roser to some amazing places.

Why do you like working here?

First of all, our board meeting room is a wave pool, which is not a bad office perk. But honestly, the best part is the team and the culture at Flowstate. It’s a group of really passionate people who love surfing and love building things. Being around that energy every day is pretty inspiring. And seeing surfers watch their waves for the first time is always priceless. There’s usually a big smile… and sometimes a little Flowstate reality check.

Do you remember the first time you saw your surfing on Flowstate?

I was actually a Flowstate user before working here. URBNSURF Melbourne was the first pool where Flowstate installed the technology, and I was part of the early testing before the platform launched.

I still remember the day Luke Wallace came to a Melbourne Boardriders event at the pool and told us about Flowstate. Everyone was like, “No way.” Then he said they had already been capturing our waves for a month, and we could go log in. Suddenly, everyone grabbed their phones trying to find their clips.

Seeing yourself surf for the first time is a bit of a Flowstate reality check, but it’s also one of the fastest ways to improve. My surfing has definitely improved since Flowstate entered the equation. That’s when I became a big fan.
