O₂ SURFTOWN MUC and the German Surfing Federation have launched a surf instructor training program focused on coaching in wave pools.
The course, titled “DWV Pool Surf Instructor Level 1 – DOSB Trainer C,” is described as the first official training program specializing in instruction within artificial wave facilities. It was developed to address demand for qualified coaches as wave pools expand internationally as training centers, youth development platforms and event venues.
Organizers said wave pools have gained importance in high-performance sport since surfing’s Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, offering controlled training environments for athletes.
The two-week program combines methodological instruction and practical training. Participants plan and lead beginner surf lessons in the pool, implement coaching concepts in the wave, learn site-specific safety and operational procedures, and receive feedback on teaching methods, technique instruction and training design.
The curriculum was developed by SURFTOWN Head Coach Michael Baldauf in collaboration with Tilman Heisig, responsible for wave operations and safety, and Senior Surf Coach Gabriel Gehlert. Members of the German Surfing Federation education committee, including Grischa Görner and Matthias Thelen, were also involved in the program’s development.

Graduates who successfully complete the course receive the DOSB Trainer C Grassroots Sport certification with specialization in wave pool coaching. The certification qualifies them to train surfers in artificial wave facilities internationally.
“With the new Pool Surf Coach training program, we are creating the foundation for the highest quality and safety standards in teaching surfing in wave pools,” added Baldauf. “In a technologically controlled environment, professional coaching is essential — both for athletic development and for a safe, positive experience. Our goal is to educate coaches who inspire people, support them individually, and follow our core principle: Safety, Fun and Progress.”
Michael Zirlewagen, President of the German Surfing Federation (DWV), added that the program will increase the level of professionalism for German surfing.
“After jointly organizing the world’s first inclusive national championship in Surftown MUC in Munich in 2024,” said Zirlewagen. “We are setting the next decisive milestone on the path to greater professionalism in surfing with the new DOSB-standard training program.”
