For the first time in history, one country’s National Championships will be held in a wave pool

Germany has a long surf history and a thriving surf culture. What sprang up on the banks of the Eisbach River soon spread out to ocean zones along the North Sea, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. For years the German Surfing Championships were held in France, but now the event that crowns the country’s best surfers will be held on home turf.

From October 11 to 13, 2024, O2 SURFTOWN MUC will host this event. The DWV’s decision to hold the German Championships near Munich will showcase nearly 100 of the country’s best surfers who will compete for German titles in German surf for the first time.

“Not only is the first-time presence of the German Championships on home soil a milestone, but also the opportunity to host three of our sports – Adaptive Surfing, Stand Up Paddling (SUP), and Surfing – inclusively in a surf park is a world premiere,” said Michael Zirlewagen, President of the German Surfing Association (DWV). “We want to use the momentum after the renewed qualification for the Olympic Games and the new opportunities in Hallbergmoos near Munich in 2024 to further raise awareness of surfing in Germany.”

The O2 SURFTOWN MUC facility uses Endless Surf technology which allows waves to be varied and precisely controlled, eliminating the usual one-week “waiting period.” This ensures a perfectly planned German Championship event with the best conditions guaranteed from October 11 to 13, 2024.

Germany’s surfing roots started on the Eisbach River in Central Munich then made its way out to the nearest oceans. This year for the first time the German Champs will be held in Germany.

Chief Surfing Officer Michael Mohr at O2 SURFTOWN MUC is proud to be at the center of this shift in German surfing.

“We are very pleased that the DWV has decided to host the 2024 German Championships with us,” said Michael. “With the German Championships, we want to set not only a sign of inclusion but also one for the next generation. Having the elite of German surfing here in Hallbergmoos, including three Olympic participants, and experiencing a German Championship up close will surely inspire and motivate the kids.”

The event will feature prominent athletes, including Tim Elter and Camilla Kemp, who are preparing for the Paris 2024 Olympics, as well as Leon Glatzer, a competitor from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Their participation highlights the competitive caliber of the event. In addition to the sporting events, attendees can expect a variety of activities, including musical performances, culinary options, social gatherings, and surfing demonstrations.

The competition will feature qualifications on Friday and Saturday, with the finals set for Sunday. Admission is free, allowing attendees to enjoy a range of activities, including music, movies, food, drinks, and surf demonstrations.

For German surfers competing, the entry fee is 90 EUR per discipline, with a reduced fee of 55 EUR for participants under 18. The registration deadline is September 8, 2024, at midnight. Check the DWV website for more information.
