German national champs held in Munich wave pool

The German Surf Championships made history this weekend in Munich, attracting more than 10,000 spectators to the country’s first wave pool. This marked the first time in 28 years that the championships were held in Germany, with 123 of the nation’s top surfers competing. Thousands more tuned in to watch the thrilling finals on Sportschau and YouTube.

On the opening day, excitement filled the air as surfers from across the country showcased their skills in various categories. The impressive turnout and media coverage highlight Germany’s emergence as a surfing nation and the significance of this historic event in the sports world.

Camilla Kemp, Germany’s first female Olympic surfer for Paris 2024, showcased her fighting spirit against the nation’s top female surfers, ultimately claiming the title of German Champion 2024. She is dedicated to inspiring young women to take up surfing and highlights Munich as a prime training location for the sport, which has traditionally been practiced by the sea.

In the fiercely competitive Open Men Shortboard category, Leon Glatzer narrowly defeated Tim Elter to secure the title of German Champion 2024. Glatzer, the first German surfer to compete in the 2021 Olympics, faced strong competition from Elter, who will also represent Germany in the 2024 Olympics and earned the title of Vice Champion.

Special guest Jamie O’Brien, a world-renowned Hawaiian surf pro, energized the audience and surf community with his presence, expressing excitement at witnessing the performances live.

The German Championships showcased top-level surfing, complemented by a moderated livestream on YouTube that provided insights into the surfers’ maneuvers and tricks.

This event marked a significant milestone for the future of surfing in Germany, introducing para-surfing and stand-up paddling (SUP) in a wave pool for the first time worldwide. This initiative demonstrates that surfing is accessible to everyone, regardless of age, gender, or physical ability—a groundbreaking achievement on German soil.
