Iconic 80s watch brand adds wave pool to cross-sport comp

As wave pools gain prominence in the global sports consciousness, inland surf contests have proliferated. Events range from the free-spirited Stab High to the more formal WSL QS events, all benefiting from the reliable surf conditions wave pools provide.

Swatch, a brand traditionally associated with action sports in snowy environments, has announced its latest venture into the world of surfing. This week, the Swiss watchmaker revealed that Waco Surf will be included as a stop on their Nines tour.

The tour kicks off with a snowboarding event in Schilthorn, Switzerland, then moves to Bike Republic Sölden, Austria, for a mountain biking competition, before making its surf event debut in Waco, Texas.

Swatch describes the Nines event as embracing a progressive format that prioritizes creativity and offers an alternative to the conventional competitive sports model.

“Swatch Nines Surf will make its debut in October 2024 as a double first: the first Nines surf event and the first Nines event to take place in the United States,” the company announced. “Swatch Nines introduces its innovative approach to surfing, aiming to create a unique session that serves as a friendly antagonist and antithesis to the standardized competitive aspect of the sport.”

The Nuts and Bolts of it:

  • Dates: 15th – 17th of October 2024
  • Location: Waco Surf, Texas, USA
  • Developed in collaboration with Coco Ho and friends
  • A 3-day media event emphasizing creativity: a playground for reimagining surf events
  • A novel concept that merges surfing with skateboarding
  • Invites for 9-15 surf and skate athletes
  • An unconventional jam session format
