Southern Germany to get new standing wave pool
Surfield GmbH has announced the opening of IRIE SURF, the first wave pool in Baden-Württemberg. The project is set to launch in April 2025 and will be located in Freiburg. Developers said they will be using citywave rapid wave technology in the city of Freiburg.
The site, covering over 2,000 square meters, is situated ten minutes from Freiburg’s city center and is accessible by various modes of transportation, including bus, streetcar, car, bike, and on foot. The facility’s wave pool is designed for both beginners and advanced surfers. Beginners will have access to well-instructed courses and a smaller wave, while more experienced surfers can practice on a larger and steeper wave.
In addition to surfing, the surf park will host sporting events and international competitions featuring prominent figures from the surfing community. Surrounding the surf pool, a bar and restaurant will offer food and beverages, providing a space for relaxation and socializing.
IRIE SURF said they aim to promote not only surfing but also community engagement and sustainability. The facility plans to implement integrative and surf-therapeutic initiatives in collaboration with various organizations, targeting families and individuals of all ages. The Irie Surf comms team said that the entire operation will be powered by green electricity, and the use of environmentally friendly materials is part of the facility’s design.
“Since surfing was included as an Olympic sport in 2020, its popularity has increased globally,” the company said in a statement. “IRIE SURF seeks to bring this trend to southwest Germany and contribute to the region’s development as a recognized surfing area.”
The IRIE SURF team anticipates that the facility will provide a venue for both local residents and visitors to experience surfing culture in southern Germany. The wave pool has pre-sale bookings available online.
