Endless Surf 2023A

That hotly-anticipated, much talked about Cabo wave pool officially announces it will have an Endless Surf design as its centerpiece

For years Baja Mexico has been the quintessential road trip for California surfers. The northern spots near the border were first explored in the ‘50s and became a standard weekend destination through the ’60s and ’70s. As crowd pressure increased, surfers pushed further south until they ran out of road at the tip of the peninsula and mapped out towns like Todos Santos, Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

“Surfers have always viewed the area as a place to slow down and relax, and a typical Baja jaunt will often consist of equal parts beer drinking, fishing, napping, reading, and surfing,” Matt Warshaw said in the Encyclopedia of Surfing. “The warm, easy-to-ride surf breaks in and around the resort towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo also became popular in the ’80s.”

Southern Baja became the home for ex-pat boomers chasing the freedom of easy living in a dreamy climate. Now a generation later we find a new development project with guaranteed surf. But residents here won’t reside in a kitted-out custom mobile home blasting Jimmy Buffet on repeat. Instead, we see lux homes next to a world-class wave pool with prices starting at $2.5millionUS.

The development model of owning a home adjacent a wave pool is somewhat new to North America. But in South America, there are no less than four projects built on this principle, including JHSF, the Luan Group and KSM Realty. The latter, spearheaded by Oscar Segall, built Praia da Grama and told WavePoolMag that by putting a surf tank at the center, surrounding land had increased up to 5 times the previous value.

In the northern hemisphere, Meriwether Companies, a U.S. private real estate investment and development firm, and the Sanchez Navarro family, early landowners and developers in Los Cabos, have announced the official launch and groundbreaking of Cabo Real Surf Club. This new community will feature North America’s first private Endless Surf wave basin, alongside a championship golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones II and various sport and wellness amenities.

Cabo Real Surf Club is part of the established 3,000-acre Cabo Real master plan in Los Cabos, Mexico, a prominent resort destination. Construction of the wave basin, residential infrastructure, and golf improvements is already underway, with an expected completion date in 2026. A Founders sales launch held in early 2024 generated over $50 million in homesite sales.

Cabo Real Surf Club will include more than 200 homes in its initial phase, featuring custom estate lots, boardwalk homesites, surf casitas, and ocean-view villas. The development will center around a private Endless Surf wave basin that incorporates advanced surf technology and sustainable practices. The facility is designed for surfers of all skill levels, offering hundreds of customizable waves per hour and allowing for rides of up to 25 seconds with wave heights adjustable up to seven feet.

But this isn’t your grandfather’s country club community. The Cabo Real club is being designed for a new generation of wealthy buyers who expect additional features. The club, which features North America’s first Endless Surf wave basin, is aimed at the millennial jet set and their families, who are more focused on wellness and adventure than sitting idly by the pool, cocktail in hand.

Endless Surf parent company Whitewater prides itself on a long history of wave pools and in 2024 Endless Surf pushed out their first waves in Munich at the O2 SURFTOWN MUC facility. The current technology uses pneumatic caissons to create waves as synchronized through highly sophisticated software. Endless Surf is currently poised to power well over a dozen surf parks currently in the works globally.

Meriwether Companies says they specialize in resort master planning, hospitality, and commercial development. The firm is well-known for developing mountain destinations, private club offerings, signature food and beverage establishments, and sports and wellness resorts, primarily in the western United States and Mexico. A tour of their website shows activities including surfing, fishing, golfing and heli-skiing.

The partners of Meriwether Companies include Graham Culp, David Likins, and the surf-obsessed Michael B. Schwab who we profiled in 2021. Early announcements for a project in the same area listed Schwab as the mastermind behind a KSWaveCo basin develpment. Announced at the time by Big Sky Wave Developments, the plan was to add Kelly’s brand of wave to the area’s scattered points and beach breaks. There is no official word if this is the same project or a different one.

Managing partner at Meriwether Companies Graham Culp says the project will embody the adventurous spirit of the Baja Peninsula,

“This community represents a celebration of Los Cabos’ ideal climate, natural beauty and culture, offering members an inspiring lifestyle that seamlessly integrates surf, exceptional golf, family time and wellness in a captivating locale,” said Graham.

The Cabo Real Surf Club will have access to a championship golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones II, which is currently undergoing multi-million-dollar enhancements and is scheduled for completion in 2025. Plans include converting the golf course into a fully private facility for residents of Cabo Real Surf Club.

The master plan also includes a private oceanfront beach club, an infinity pool, and a golf clubhouse with fitness facilities and a wellness spa. Additional amenities feature a racquet sports center with tennis, and pickleball, along with mountain biking and hiking trails.

The Surf Club will serve as a social hub, featuring two additional pool areas, surf viewing spots, food and beverage options, and surf retail. Members will also have opportunities for sport fishing, diving, and surfing outside the Cabo Real boundaries.

Membership at Cabo Real Surf Club is limited to real estate owners, with amenities accessible only to members and invited guests. Current offerings include custom estate lots and villa homesites with four- and five-bedroom plans that highlight ocean and mountain views, as well as Boardwalk Homesites with pre-designed residences by Sordo Madaleno. Details for the Surf Casita neighborhood, featuring three-bedroom homes starting at $2.5 million, will be announced later this winter.

Cabo Real Surf Club is located 20 minutes from Los Cabos International Airport, with direct flights from major U.S. cities.
