Surf Coaching at o2 SURFTOWN MUC – The Future of Surf Training

The Future of Surf Coaching: Training with Michael Baldauf at o2 SURFTOWN MUC

Surf coaching has traditionally been tied to ocean waves, where coaches line the shore, analyzing every set. At Lowers, for example, it’s common to see surf instructors with cameras, waiting for the perfect wave to guide their students. But this method comes with challenges—timing unpredictable swells and monitoring surfers from a distance.

With the rise of wave pool surf coaching, surfers now have a controlled training environment that eliminates these obstacles. In Munich, o2 SURFTOWN MUC, one of Germany’s top wave pools, is redefining how surfers learn and progress. We sat down with Michael Baldauf, head surf coach at o2 SURFTOWN MUC, to explore how artificial waves are revolutionizing surf training and skill development.

Meet Michael Baldauf: The Surf Coach Behind the Sessions

Michael Baldauf’s path to becoming a surf coach has taken him across continents and diverse surf cultures. Born in Germany but raised in Peru, he started surfing at a young age before moving to Costa Rica for ten years. There (and later in Germany), he worked with surf therapy programs. Now, as head coach at o2 SURFTOWN MUC, he oversees 54 surf coaches, ensuring a high-quality experience for surfers of all levels.

“A major part of my job is managing the surf coaches and overseeing timetables,” said Michael Baldauf. “I ensure our coaches perform well while also managing what happens in the pool to make sure it’s safe, fun, and progressive for customers.”

How Surf Coaching Works at o2 SURFTOWN MUC

One of the unique aspects of o2 SURFTOWN MUC is its versatile coaching program, which caters to everyone from first-time surfers to competitive athletes. Unlike ocean surfing, wave pools provide consistent waves, allowing for targeted skill progression.

Beginner Surf Coaching: From First Waves to Confidence in the Water

o2 SURFTOWN MUC provides a two-hour experience for complete beginners, which includes a 45-minute briefing on essential surf fundamentals such as board handling, currents, paddling, and pop-up techniques. Following the briefing, participants engage in a Rookie Session, where they have the opportunity to catch their first unbroken waves while concentrating on improving their pop-up skills.

“We coach people who have never touched the ocean before, often due to fears like being afraid of fish,” said Michael. “The wave pool provides a controlled space where they can gain confidence.”

Progressing to the Next Level: The Biggest Challenge

The transition from rookie to progressive surfing comes with challenges, the biggest of which is paddling.

“In wave pools, surfers can become lazy because they don’t need to duck dive or paddle much,” added Michael. “When they move to the progressive level, they suddenly need to paddle for their own waves, which is a steep learning curve.”

Advanced Surf Coaching: Learning Airs and High-Performance Maneuvers

For experienced surfers, o2 SURFTOWN MUC offers advanced training programs designed to push surfers beyond their limits. The pool’s Endless Surf wave technology allows for custom wave settings, perfect for practicing high-performance maneuvers.

“For someone looking to learn airs, we can create an easy ramp for small airs or provide an expert point with an air section,” said Michael. “We’re also working on new wave settings to refine this experience.”

Engineering the Perfect Wave: The Role of Wave Programmers

Michael works closely with engineers and wave programmers to enhance the surfing experience at o2 SURFTOWN MUC. This collaboration ensures that the wave patterns replicate real ocean conditions as closely as possible.

“A big part of my job is testing different wave patterns. We continuously communicate with the technicians to fine-tune wave settings and create the best conditions for skill progression.”

Why Attitude Matters More Than Skill in Surf Coaching

Beyond technique, Michael emphasizes the importance of attitude in coaching. Many surfers underestimate their abilities or feel nervous about trying new things.

“We believe attitude comes before skill. Skills can be learned, but good coaching requires connecting with people. Many customers are afraid or don’t trust their abilities, so we focus on making them feel comfortable and motivated.”

The Future of Surf Coaching at o2 SURFTOWN MUC

As wave pools become more advanced, surf coaching will continue to evolve. With its wave technology, ideal location and experienced coaching staff, o2 SURFTOWN MUC is adding to the collective coaching pool of surf training in artificial waves.

For surfers in Munich, o2 SURFTOWN MUC offers a structured environment to develop skills, whether at the beginner or advanced level. As wave pools become a more prominent part of surf training, locations like this provide an opportunity to refine technique in a controlled setting.
