Kelly Slater doesn’t own the celebrity-wave-pool-guest niche. Wavegarden encroached on the King’s turf this month as pop superstar Shakira hit the R&D facility in the Basque Country of Spain.

The Queen of Latin Music has a long, successful career and topped the American charts with “Hips Don’t Lie,” a duo featuring Haitian rapper Wyclef Jean. The song spent five weeks as the number one single in 2006 and was often parodied, including a bizarre Glenn Danzig mashup.

Beyond music, Shakira is an actress, philanthropist and goofyfoot with a solid safety stance who throws out heaps of smiles and shakas each wave. In an Instagram post she says, “I’m gonna be ripping today,” then laughs brightly. At the end of the 30-second clip, Shakira informs viewers “That was awesome.”
