Germany’s first wave pool inks deal with Volkswagen
Munich’s new wave pool, O2 SURFTOWN MUC, has announced a partnership with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWN) as its “official mobility partner.” The 20,000 square meter surf park, currently under construction in the northern area of the Bavarian capital, will feature VWN’s presence both on-site and across O2 SURFTOWN MUC’s digital platforms.
The partnership entails a comprehensive presence for VWN within the surf park and across the digital channels of O2 SURFTOWN MUC. VWN will also provide a fleet of vehicles for the surf park, including the all-electric ID. Buzz, the Multivan, Caddy, Crafter, the Amarok pick-up, and the California camper family.
VWN’s involvement at O2 SURFTOWN MUC will create a “representation” for fans of the brand, fostering a year-round surfing lifestyle in southern Germany.
Sandra Waidelich, Head of Marketing & Sales Experience at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, emphasized VW’s long history with surfing.
“Outdoor experiences have been part of our brand DNA from the very beginning and our products – especially our California family – embody a special attitude to life,” said Sandra. “They offer the perfect mix of style, functionality and individuality and also represent the freedom to take a quick trip to the beach before work because the wind and waves are just right. That’s why the cooperation with O2 SURFTOWN MUC just outside Munich is perfect for us and our customers.”
Chris Boehm-Tettelbach, founder and CEO of SURFTOWN, remarked on the historical synergy between VWN and the surfing culture.
“VWN and surfing have always belonged together – the good old Bulli and all its successor models have been the surfing vehicle par excellence for generations,” said Chris. “You can take them to the most remote places in the world and have enough space for all the equipment and they offer the comfortable option of spending the night directly on the beach or in nature. I am therefore very pleased to continue this story with our partnership.”
VWN will be prominently featured at O2 SURFTOWN MUC with a large outdoor presentation area, allowing visitors to engage with the brand and its models throughout the year. The partnership also includes branding on the XXL LED wall along the 180-meter-long surf pool and on all screens within the surf park. Additionally, VWN will be integrated into all digital channels of O2 SURFTOWN MUC, including the website and social media platforms, with plans for collaborative content. The partnership is set to last for two years initially.
The construction of the 20,000 square meter O2 SURFTOWN MUC surf park in Hallbergmoos, adjacent to Munich Airport, is progressing on schedule, with an official opening slated for early summer 2024. The focus is currently on finishing the wave pool, installing the wave technology, and building the roof of the surf center.
The park will also mark the debut of the Endless Surf wave-making technology.
