Wave Pool Wait: New Jersey waterpark’s grand opening delayed

The water park component of New Jersey’s American Dream Mall, the $5billion mega-complex with a view of Manhattan and the world’s only indoor surf-specific wave pool, won’t be opening next week.

A spokesperson for the DreamWorks Water Park said the indoor facility’s November 27 opening date is postponed until further notice. No reason for the delay was provided.

“Creating the ultimate entertainment experience takes time and patience,” Dana McHugh, a spokesperson for American Dream told the Patch. “Unfortunately that means we’ll have to wait a little longer for the opening of DreamWorks Water Park.”

The waterpark includes a 70-foot water slide, lazy river, more slides, a water coaster and of course Waco’s baby sister, a PerfectSwell temp-controlled wave pool which creators American Wave Machines have labored over this year.

“Hats off to Gary Hanson [VP development, attractions at American Dream] and his epic team at Triple Five for imagining and then building the unimaginable,” said Bruce McFarland of American Wave Machines. “This dream included surfing 10 miles west of Manhattan.”

McFarland also told Blooloop that the new water park design “speaks to PerfectSwell scalability and flexibility.”

In a quick clip produced by American Wave Machines, East Coast surfers Cruz Dinofa, Rob Kelly, Quincy Davis and Pat Schmidt lit up a pre-public opening session by tearing into crisp little wedges and tucking into tubes.

Perfect swell is powered by air compression fired off in a sequence from a large wall. The timing of the air is done by sophisticated computer software that allows park users to create a wide variety of waves.

Most recently Bruce McFarland traveled to Waco to play wave wizard, adjusting the settings at BSR Surf Resort according to the whims and desires of Mason Ho and Blair Conklin.

We will keep you posted on opening dates and pricing as it becomes available.
