Flowstate AI video capture system wins Surfing Australia Innovation Award

Melbourne-based computer vision startup Flowstate has taken out the Innovation Award at the 2023 Australian Surfing Awards held at the Bondi Pavilion in Bondi Beach, Sydney.

This service allows surfers to access and download high-definition clips of their waves, simplifying the process of video management. Flowstate said they designed the AI technology to help amplify the guest experience while also creating additional revenue streams for operators. The product also produces a suite of data and analytics for activity in the pools.

“This award means a lot to us at Flowstate,” said CEO Luke Wallace. “To be recognized at the elite level amongst the who’s who of Australian surfing is a testament to the complicated problem-solving the team has undergone in the past years in developing this AI technology specifically for surfing.”

Flowstate thanked the team at URBNSURF for their early support of the system, which delivers a branded consumer-facing platform that doesn’t require any wearable or tracking devices.

“Thanks for backing the upstarts from Melbourne who were competing against much bigger names in the industry,” added Luke. “We can’t wait for URBNSURF Sydney to open so we can share this with an even wider group of the Australian surfing community.”

Flowstate in America

The team from Flowstate marveled at how far they’ve come in such a short time. “The development of AI technology is only in its infancy, and to have come this far in such a short period of time, the future is very bright and I’m really looking forward to developing new products and features that will enhance people’s surfing experience, develop skills at a rapid rate and help people share the stoke of surfing.”

Late last year, Flowstate emerged as the recipient of the highly coveted Innovation Award at the 2023 Surf Park Summit. The event, which brought together industry leaders, visionaries, and innovators, featured strong competition that saw Flowstate triumph over formidable finalists and industry leaders in wave-making, Wavegarden and Surf Lakes.

Flowstate’s technology is currently available at URBNSURF in Melbourne, Australia, and soon to be at URBNSURF Sydney upon its opening in 2024. Beyond Australia, Flowstate’s technology is also landing in America at Fireside Surf Texas, Waco Surf, and Revel Surf Park Arizona.
